For half a century, the East Texas Lighthouse (ETL) has stood as a beacon of opportunity, inclusion, and empowerment for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. What began in 1975 as a small effort to provide employment has evolved into a comprehensive network of services that now supports people across every stage of life—including students, young adults, and their families navigating the educational and transitional years.
At the heart of their mission is the belief that with the right tools and support, individuals with visual impairments can lead fulfilling, independent lives—and that journey can begin at any age.
Early Connections: Children’s Events and Community Engagement
The relationships with families often begin with early exposure through outreach and community-based children’s events. These gatherings are designed to bring families together, create peer connections, and offer exposure to adaptive tools and strategies in fun, low-pressure environments. Whether through holiday-themed gatherings, adaptive sports days, or awareness events like East Texas White Cane Day, these experiences plant the seeds of confidence and connection.
“It’s not just about the child—it’s about the whole family learning, growing, and being seen,” says Alicia Lansford, Vice President and Chief Mission Officer. “We want parents to feel they’re not alone on this journey.”
Summer Independence: Camp Lighthouse
Each summer, East Texas Lighthouse hosts Camp Lighthouse, a weeklong camp that provides an unforgettable experience for students who are blind or visually impaired. Campers participate in accessible recreational activities, learn daily living skills, explore technology, and form lifelong friendships.
Staffed by vision professionals and trained volunteers, Camp Lighthouse offers a safe and nurturing environment where independence is encouraged and celebrated. For many students, this is their first time away from home in a supportive peer setting—an essential milestone for growing self-confidence and autonomy.
Launching Forward: College Prep and Scholarships
For students approaching graduation, the East Texas Lighthouse offers comprehensive support to bridge the gap between high school and higher education or employment. Their College Prep Program is a five-week summer initiative designed to provide recent high school graduates with firsthand college experience, coupled with essential life skills training. Participants enroll in a three-credit-hour Learning Frameworks course at Tyler Junior College and reside independently on the TJC campus. Concurrently, they receive training from East Texas Lighthouse staff in areas such as Orientation & Mobility, Activities of Daily Living, Assistive Technology, Postsecondary Education, and Career Preparation. This immersive program not only acclimates students to college life but also equips them with the tools needed for academic and personal success.
In addition to preparatory programs, the East Texas Lighthouse offers a Scholarship Program to provide financial assistance to qualifying students pursuing higher education or training. These needs-based scholarships can help cover expenses such as tuition, books, fees, technology, housing, and transportation. Beyond financial support, scholarship recipients benefit from educational case management services, ensuring a holistic approach to their academic journey.
Preparing for the Workforce: Readiness and Real Opportunity
For youth nearing adulthood, the East Texas Lighthouse offers a Work Readiness Program that prepares students for employment through resume workshops, mock interviews, assistive technology training, and career exploration. They believe employment is not only a goal—but a right—and are committed to helping every individual chart a path that works for them.
In some cases, that path leads to direct employment with Horizon Industries, the manufacturing division of East Texas Lighthouse that employs individuals who are blind in meaningful, good-paying jobs. Other times, they assist young adults in finding success in the broader workforce, providing ongoing support after employment begins.
Tech That Opens Doors: Grants and Ongoing Support
For those working outside of their facility, the Technology Grant Program helps ensure that vision loss is never a barrier to employment. The ETL offers adaptive technology grants for qualifying individuals who are blind or visually impaired and working at least 20 hours a week. From screen readers to magnifiers to braille displays, these tools allow people to thrive in their chosen fields.
Individualized training on accessible software such as JAWS, ZoomText, and Fusion is also provided, empowering users to master the tools that make work and education possible.
Supporting the Whole Person, at Every Stage
What makes East Texas Lighthouse unique is its long-term commitment. The organization understands that needs evolve over time, and remains present through every life transition—from a child learning to navigate the classroom to an adult balancing work and family responsibilities.
It supports homemakers, retirees, and individuals pursuing personal goals, not just professional ones. Whether through orientation and mobility training, assistive technology, or peer mentoring, East Texas Lighthouse provides a network of services to meet people where they are and help them get where they want to go.
“What we offer isn’t just a service—it’s a relationship,” says Leona Holloman, CEO of East Texas Lighthouse. “We’re here for the long haul, helping each person define their own success and cheering them on every step of the way.”
