In the face of a natural disaster such as imminent hurricanes and widespread flooding, effective evacuation can be crucial for those in the direct path of the danger. If someone is not able to independently evacuate or has difficulty following instructions during an emergency situation, registering with the State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry (STEAR) may be an option to find support. The STEAR program is for people with disabilities, communication needs, transportation challenges, mobility difficulty or any other issue that may impact their ability to evacuate or follow instructions during an emergency situation. The registry is used to inform local emergency planners and emergency responders about any unique needs, such as someone in the home who travels with a service animal or someone who needs personal care support. Local communities determine how to use the information provided in the registry, so services and availability may vary by county. The State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry website has information about which counties participate in the program. Users can contact their local office of emergency management to see how the information from the registry is used and what services may be available.
Registration is voluntary, and if choosing to sign up, users should update their registration annually to make sure emergency responders have the most current information. To maximize the benefit of this program, registration should be completed well in advance of emergencies.
