drawing of singers

Do you love to sing? This is the summer for you to love a cappella!

A cappella is "group or solo singing without any accompaniment by musical instruments." The voice is the starting point, the instrument you always have with you! From that, you create rhythms,  beat boxing, harmonies, and more. A cappella is a fusion of energy and creativity, and in this class, teacher and students will explore this genre together.

In this performing class, students will discover the history of quartet singing … everything from barbershop quartets and sweet Adelines, to gospel, to the popular a cappella singing in the recent Perfect Pitch movies. Visits from local masters and teachers of the art are planned, as are visits to Austin musical events. Then, together, teacher and students will create an amazing vocal performance.

Both boys and girls will be accepted. You must love to sing, be able match pitch, and be prepared to work hard as a member of an enthusiastic team. On the application form, please describe any experience you have had with performance singing.

Not sure what a cappella is? Try one of these YouTube videos.  All those "instruments" you hear? Those sounds are made by the singers! And the second video – there’s only one person performing, recorded over and over, making all the different voices and instruments!
