Health and Well-Being: an Introduction to Human Sexuality

Date April 21 - 25, 2025
Ref. Date March 10, 2025
Location On Campus
Grade Lvl. 5 - 7
Subject - Access to Academics
- Health

“How do you figure out if someone likes you?”

“I don’t understand what the other kids are talking about when they use those words about their body.”

“When and where is it okay to be touched?”

Do you feel uncomfortable discussing these topics with your student who has limited or no vision? Talking about concepts related to sexuality is challenging, yet instruction on these issues is essential for learners with visual impairments. They may not be aware of physical concepts, social cues, or body language, missing information needed to keep them informed and safe.

Specific topics for this class include:

  • keeping the body healthy
  • human sexuality
  • physical components and processes of the body
  • protecting oneself from sexual harm
  • how to be a good self-advocate

Students will be taught in a safe, supported environment, using an approved TSBVI curriculum and accompanying tactile models. Female and male applicants are encouraged to apply. Students participate in mixed-gender sessions to facilitate practice having conversations about these topics as a group.

High School Independence Weekend: Performing Arts in Focus

Date May 15-18, 2025
Ref. Date April 7, 2025
Location On Campus
Grade Lvl. 9 - 12
Subject - ECC
- Art

This high school class is designed to ignite your imagination and open a doorway to the vibrant world of performing arts! Through attending live performances, interactive discussions, and hands-on experiences, we’ll explore ECC skills including travel, recreation and leisure, independent living skills, and career education through theater, dance, and music.

Here’s a taste of what you can expect:

  • Sensory Journeys: We’ll attend live performances of plays, dance performances, and musical pieces. As we hear the rise and fall of actors’ voices conveying emotions, the rhythmic tap of dancers’ feet, and the soaring melodies of instruments, we’ll discuss the soundscapes created and how they build the story.
  • Behind the Scenes: Explore behind-the-scenes aspects of the performance including sets, costuming, and theater tech.
  • Guest Speakers: Meet professional artists like actors, dancers, musicians, and sound designers. They’ll share their creative processes and answer your questions, giving students a firsthand perspective on the performing arts.

This project-based class will teach students how to plan arts outings with a special focus on how to request accommodations as a person who is blind or visually impaired. Students will also travel to events using public transportation or other means of community travel. Students will be required to participate in two online meetings prior to the actual class to research and plan what events are of interest during their weekend in Austin. This class is all about appreciating the arts and exploring self-expression through performance. We’ll celebrate the power of storytelling and experience the practical aspects of engaging in the performing arts.
