Access to Academic Skills Classes
Access to Academic Skills classes focus on assistive technology and the compensatory skills necessary for students to participate in their school communities.
- Students attend TSBVI for 3-5 days of intensive small-group instruction.
- Designed to meet the needs of both print and Braille readers.
- Students are provided with homework time to work on assignments (that they can complete independently) from their home school.
- Teachers will receive a detailed report of the skills covered in the course, including recommendations for continued practice.
- We offer classes in the following skills:
- Technology (screen readers, refreshable braille displays and notetakers)
- Prerequisites: Type approximately 10 wpm or have a braille display
- Math (abacus, Nemeth code, tactile graphics, graphing)
- Low Vision (magnification tools, anatomy of the eye and eye conditions, keyboard shortcuts, academic accommodations)
- Technology (screen readers, refreshable braille displays and notetakers)
ECC and Independence Classes
ECC classes offer students opportunities to learn and connect with peers who are blind or have low vision.
- We offer a range of classes addressing different ECC areas including:
- Self determination
- Sensory efficiency
- Recreation and leisure
- Orientation and Mobility
- Transition preparedness
- All of our courses include infused social skills and independent living skills instruction, including hands-on cooking experiences
- Students attend TSBVI for 3-5 days
