Some suggestions:

  • Obtain student's daily class schedule and feedback from student, parents, and teachers regarding optionable training slots.
  • When working with a student, always sign in at the office
  • If you are going to be working with the student away from the campus grounds always, sign the student out (in the office).
  • Obtain parent release to take student off campus.
  • Some districts do not permit staff to transport students in personal vehicles; check your district's policy.
  • Options for transporting students: parents drive the student to and from training site; use district's bus; obtain personal vehicle insurance to transport students in your vehicle (work related insurance), and liability insurance (coverage for when you're directly working with students).
  • Obtain schools' calendars. Note school out or half day dates to avoid scheduling on these days.
  • When appropriate, work with the student on being responsible for contacting you when he needs to cancel a lesson (eg. doctor's appt., field trip).
  • If student has medical condition or is habitually absent, call school prior to driving there. Save the possible/unnecessary wear and tear on your vehicle, lost fuel consumption, frustrations, wasted time, and the ozone layer.
  • Develop relationships with teacher/s and front office secretaries. They are excellent sources for contacting you when a student is absent.
  • Always bring paperwork. There still will be times when you arrive to find out the student is absent, at a school's assembly, on a field trip, etc. This will be a good opportunity to "catch up".
  • if you don't already, learn to love country music. Most students do, and no matter where you're traveling, these stations come in loud and clear.
