Activity C: Parent and Child Communication

Participant Guidelines

The purpose of this activity is to identify examples of child and parent communication and to identify factors that may influence communication development.

Materials. Video clips CL 2-09, “Takoda: Early Communication of a Child With Multiple Impairments,” and CL 2-10, “Sierra: Early Life Experiences Develop Concepts”; Handout G, Examples of Adaptive and Nonadaptive Transactional Interactions That Impact Communication Development; and “Communication Chart” worksheet

Directions

  1. Review Handout G, which illustrates the transactional nature of language acquisition in children with visual impairments.
  2. The instructor will divide participants into groups or ask participants to complete the assignment individually. Watch video clips CL 2-09 and CL 2-10.
  3. For each video clip, write a description of the child’s initial communication in the first box labeled Child on the attached “Communication Chart” worksheet.
  4. In the first box labeled Parent, describe how the parent responds to the child’s communication.
  5. In the second Child box, describe the child’s reaction to the parent’s communication.
  6. Continue filling in the boxes to show how the parent and the child influence each other’s communication and how the parent’s communication can positively influence the child’s communication development.
  7. If you are accessing this activity through a screen reader or electronic braille device, use the “Communication Chart—Alternative Version” worksheet.
  8. After completing the “Communication Chart” worksheet, view each video clip again and revise your chart as needed.
  9. Be prepared to share and discuss the charts in class or via an online discussion before turning the completed worksheet in to the instructor.
