Lilli Nielsen created Active Learning by integrating her knowledge of development in infants without disabilities and her extensive experience with children who are blind or have low vision and have additional disabilities.
Her 2001 book, Early Learning Step by Step: Children with Vision Impairment and Multiple Disabilities, considers the difference between how children with and without these disabilities learn and offers effective teaching techniques for individualization. She examines movement, a prerequisite for learning, and then shares adaptations for play and daily living activities.
The book study group will meet six times during the 2026–2027 school year on Thursdays from 3:00–4:00 p.m. Central time.
