Diane: A child functioning in phase 1 generally needs to have targets presented close to them, within 36 inches, definitely.  And generally, even closer to their face.  So distance viewing... it really is close-viewing for them.  They need to have targets presented close to their face.  This helps to eliminate visual clutter and visual complexity that's around it, and helps them to focus on the target at near.  But in phase 1, targets need to be close to the child's face.  Keep this in mind as you encourage looking behavior for the child in phase 1.
