ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Interviews students, parents or guardians, and other interested individuals and agencies to obtain social and developmental histories, including identifying potential social problems which may impact the student’s maximum use of school resources and programs; collects data from specialists as required.
  • May perform group and individual counseling with students and families as well as potential outreach services or linkage with appropriate agencies to work on those problems in a student’s living situation (home, school, and community) that affect the student’s overall constructive use of educational opportunities.  This may include crisis resolution.
  • May assist with identifying and providing linkage to appropriate community resources by referring students, parents, or guardians to such resources when appropriate.
  • Coordinates and conducts investigations pursuant to allegations of child abuse and/or neglect, bullying, sexual harassment and prepares reports in accordance with state statute and school policy.
  • Coordinates with department supervisors and staff with developing and/or expanding parent involvement in programming.
  • Coordinates annual Family Day events
  • Coordinates parental involvement activities with Family Lynx, the school’s family involvement organization.
  • Continues professional growth and development.
  • Attends work regularly in accordance with TSBVI leave policy.
  • Complies with all agency policies and procedures.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Licensed Master Social Worker or other related credential such as Licensed Professional Counselor, School Counselor or School Psychologist.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques for parent engagement and investigative practices.
  • Have or be willing to obtain the school’s required investigator certification.
  • Considerable knowledge of special populations in a school setting.
  • Considerable knowledge of statewide community resources and how to use them effectively.
  • Skill in counseling students and parents with special needs.
  • Skill in working cooperatively and effectively with other professional groups.
  • Skill in exercising tact, taking initiative and using good judgment when dealing with others.
  • Skill in preparing reports and recommendations for administrative use.
  • Skill in effective written and verbal communications.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • Experience working with students ages 6-22.
  • Experience working with students with visual impairments and other disabilities.
