ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Interviews students, parents or guardians, and other interested individuals and agencies to obtain social and developmental histories, including identifying potential social problems which may impact the student’s maximum use of school resources and programs; collects data from specialists as required.
  • Participates as a member of the student’s multi-disciplinary team.
  • Contributes technical data about the student’s developmental history, social environment and other significant factors toward the development of an IEP (Individual Education Plan) for the student.
  • Assists with committee deliberations regarding admission, review of educational programming, dismissal and/or transition from special educational services at the Texas School for the Blind & Visually Impaired.
  • Performs group and individual counseling with students and families as well as potential outreach services or linkage with appropriate agencies to work on those problems in a student’s living situation (home, school, and community) that affect the student’s overall constructive use of educational opportunities. This may include crisis resolution.
  • Assists with identifying and providing linkage to appropriate community resources by referring students, parents, or guardians to such resources when appropriate.
  • Consults with other school personnel about the impact of student’s life situation upon the educational process.
  • Conducts investigations pursuant to allegations of child abuse and/or neglect, and prepares reports in accordance with state statute and school policy.
  • Assists students and parents or guardians with transition planning and coordinates community resources to assist students in returning to community life; performs liaison work with other state agencies, institutions, and community resources.
  • Assists department supervisors and staff with developing and/or expanding parent involvement in programming.
  • Promotes positive relations through effective communications and involvement with staff, family, appropriate agencies and community members to meet individual student needs.
  • Continues professional growth and development.
  • Attends work regularly in accordance with TSBVI leave policy.
  • Complies with all agency policies and procedures.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree from a school of social work accredited by the Council on Social Work [Applicant selected for hire will be required to submit a copy of college or university transcript].
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker or currently eligible to be licensed.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles, methods, techniques and practice of social work.
  • Considerable knowledge of the functioning of schools serving special populations.
  • Considerable knowledge of community resources and how to use them effectively.
  • Skill in counseling students with special needs.
  • Skill in working cooperatively and effectively with other professional groups.
  • Skill in exercising tact, taking initiative and using good judgment when dealing with others.
  • Skill in preparing reports and recommendations for administrative use.
  • Skill in effective written and verbal communications.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • Experience working with students ages 6-22.
  • Experience working with students with visual impairments and other disabilities.
