ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Plans with other members of Outreach Programs and TSBVI Staff to provide comprehensive support to local schools and agencies who serve students with visual impairment or who are deafblind.
- Assists Education Service Center Staff and local administrators with the design and implementation of O&M programming in in the home, school, and community as required by IDEA.
- Provides technical assistance to local direct service providers with respect to particular students.
- Plans and conducts workshops and other training experiences for professionals, families, and outside agencies
- Designs and maintains online O&M resources.
- Consults with families of students with visual impairments regarding orientation and mobility issues.
- Participates with other members of Outreach Programs and TSBVI Staff in the development and implementation of statewide conferences and training on education of students who have visual impairments and/or additional disabilities.
- Develops and/or collects and maintains appropriate materials that may be used in consulting, providing technical assistance, assisting parents, or other aspects of the duties of the position.
- Remains current on issues and legal requirements related to Orientation and Mobility and the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC).
- Attends work regularly in accordance with TSBVI leave policy and procedure.
- Complies with all agency policies and procedures.
- Performs related work as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university [Applicant selected for hire will be required to submit a copy of college or university transcript(s)].
- Current certification by the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP) as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) [Copy of certificate required at time of interview].
- Five years full-time experience as an O&M Specialist working with students in public schools.
- Extensive organizational, interpersonal, and presentational skills.
- Skill in working successfully with professionals, paraprofessionals, parents, local schools and other agencies.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a transdisciplinary environment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Expertise with assistive technologies for use in O&M training.
- Experience using distance learning technologies, including webinars, videoconferencing, web-based products, blogs and/or social networking.
- Extensive experience working with children, birth to age 5
- Teacher certification in visual impairment, deaf and hard of hearing, deafblind, or speech/language.
- Fluent in Spanish and/or ASL.
