ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Assists with development of policies and procedures for identifying a student with dyslexia or a related disorder and for providing appropriate, evidence-based instructional services to the student.
  • Assists with screenings as described in the “Dyslexia Handbook: Procedures Concerning Dyslexia and Related Disorders”.
  • Assists Educational Diagnostician and Licensed Specialists in School Psychology with conducting evaluations for dyslexia and related disorders.
  • Assists with selection of evidence-based reading program(s) for students with dyslexia and related disorders.
  • Recommends instructional services, including frequency and duration, to students’ ARD committees.
  • Drafts IEP goals and objectives and documents related progress.
  • Participates in team meetings, ARD planning meetings and ARD committee meetings.
  • Consults with teachers and parents.
  • Provides individualized, intensive, multisensory, phonetic instructional services to students with dyslexia,  related disorders and other struggling readers.
  • Assists with planning and providing the professional development activities required for all teachers regarding awareness of and appropriate instructional methods for students with dyslexia and related disorders.
  • Provides an individualized parent education program for each student with dyslexia and related disorders including required information and resources; keeps related documentation of program provided.
  • May provide supervision to teachers to prepare for certification as a Certified Academic Language Practitioner (CALP) or Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT).
  • Continues professional growth and development.
  • Attends work regularly in accordance with TSBVI leave policy and procedure.
  • Complies with all agency policies and procedures.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university [Applicant selected for hire will be required to submit a copy of all college or university transcripts].
  • Texas teacher certification.
  • Must have or be willing to obtain Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments certification (State Board for Educator Certification) within a specified period of time.
  • Certified Academic Language Therapist (Academic Language Therapy Association) with training in Basic Language Skills.
  • Must have or be willing to obtain Texas Licensed Dyslexia Therapist (Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Masters degree in special education or related field.
  • Experience teaching students with visual impairments, dyslexia and related disorders.
