Electrifying News – Remembering Legends
Today’s news sadly serves as more of a memorial edition. First, I’d like to recognize the passing of Dr. Cay Holbrook. A leader in the field of blind and low vision education, Cay was well known for publishing many works with a focus on literacy and learning media assessments; many in partnership with Alan Koenig. She also was a contributor and consultant to the Building on Patterns materials from APH and co-founder of the Getting in Touch with Literacy Conference. Cay was admired and well loved throughout the world and will long be remembered for her commitment to the education of blind students.
Over the past week, our flag has been flying at half staff in honor of Dolly Parton. Well known for her music, producing, and acting, she was also beloved for her kindness and philanthropy. She has created Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to ensure books are available to children as she understood the importance of literacy. This import she believed was true for all children, as she partnered with APH to provide braille books to children who are blind, too. She once said, “If I’m remembered 100 years from now, I hope it will be not for looks but for books.”
This week at TSBVI, the Auditorium will be closed Tuesday – Friday for installation of a new projector and screen. Next Monday is Labor Day, which is a travel day for students (no school) and a holiday for staff. Thank you to those departments working Monday to ensure students can start back on Tuesday.
