Developing software to teach mathematics to blind or visually impaired people, and others who are print-impaired. This is not a tutorial, although a tutorial-mode will be part of the package. Think of it as a virtual pencil, a tool that a blind person can use to solve a math problem. The software does the job of the pencil. It moves to the right spot on the "paper", guided by the user, and inputs the answers that the user selects. It also reads the problem out loud. The user must provide the brain. The current prototype handles addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, and it is not yet ready to be released. Future versions will do higher levels of math. Check out the website for current progress.

  • mimio Xi - the portable and affordable device that turns any whiteboard into an interactive whiteboard. Simply attach mimio Xi to any standard whiteboard, connect to your PC and everything that is written or drawn is instantly recorded - in color and real-time so that it can be saved and shared with students, parents, and colleagues (like the VI teacher). With the VCR-like playback feature, students can rewind and replay notes, stroke-by-stroke, at their own pace. With the zoom feature, visually-impaired students can magnify a word, equation, or diagram to the desired size. Diagrams can also be sent directly to the Tiger graphics embosser; however, any labeling will be in raised handwriting - still pretty good for "quick and dirty" feedback.
  • mimio writing Recognition software - convert handwritten notes into ready-to-edit text (which can be easily converted to literary braille - not Nemeth yet).
  • mimio boardCast software - add audio to your notes.
  • mimio classRoom software - share notes with students in real-time over your network.
  • mimio carry case - ideal for taking mimio from class to class and on the road.
  • mimioBoard - combines the mimio technology with a high quality, porcelain on steel whiteboard.

Raised prints for the blind are produced by a technique developed at Tactile Vision Inc. The printing method involves the deposition of a polymeric material on a paper substrate. This technique is an excellent method of reproducing both tactile graphics and braille. The tactile graphics are of high elevation and excellent resolution. The braille is easily readable and does not compress with repeated use or storage. The materials used are safe and leave no residue when handled.
Prints are produced from hard copy originals or electronic files supplied by the customer, from materials available in Tactile Vision files or from designs commissioned by organizations or individuals.
The technique can be applied to a wide range of papers. The most popular sizes are 8.5" by 11" and 11" by 11.5" with the maximum size of 11" by 17".

The TIGER is a personal computer printer that embosses crisp, high-resolution tactile graphics and Braille. The embosser prints a combination of text and graphics directly from any Windows application. The text can be printed in Braille or DotsPlus, and the graphics are represented in tactile form. The TIGER has now gone 3-D and embosses using variable-height punching. Available in various sizes: Tiger Pro, Tiger Max, Tiger Cub, or Tiger Cub Jr.
The Accessible Graphing Calculator is a self-voicing graphing scientific calculator program. Unlike a hand-held calculator, it displays results through speech and sounds, as well as visually presenting numbers and graphs. Braille graphics can be created directly via the TIGER embosser or indirectly using a tactile imaging machine.
