Training Needs Survey

The AFB Textbooks and Instructional Materials Solutions Forum has five work groups with specific goals and objectives. The Training Work Group focuses on the training needs of those who create and use textbooks and instructional materials for students who are blind or visually impaired.

The Training Work Group identified the need for up-to-date information concerning the training needs of braille transcribers. The purpose of the survey is to provide a national overview of the numbers of trained braillists, skill sets necessary for the job, recruitment and retention issues for braillists, and the tasks they typically perform, including defining new solutions for long range planning.  The focus of the Training Survey is on textbooks and instructional materials associated with the textbook and not on  teacher-made materials. The survey has four sections: general information, supply and demand of transcribers, transcriber skill sets, and training and continuing education.   In the final report, we will not be identifying individual states and their responses, but rather encourage new thinking of how states can create better policies and processes for the future as it relates to the development and production of textbooks and materials.

A final report will be developed in October, 2000.  The report will supply general information to encourage states to create better policies and processes for producing textbooks and other instructional materials in accessible media.
