Copy and Paste Info from the Web
with JFW 4.5

by Sharon Nichols

  1. Start MS Internet Explorer using either a teacher made shortcut, or by pressing the Windows logo key, then P for Programs, then I until you hear Internet Explorer, finally press the Enter key to launch Internet Explorer.
  2. Now use a search engine such as www.google.com to locate the information you want to locate. Refer to lesson entitled, “Seti-Search Lesson".
  3. Locate the information you want to copy from the web page by using the up and down arrow to read through the web page. When the correct information is heard, use the INSERT + left arrow to get to the first word of the selection to copy. If you go to far back in the document, use the INSERT + right arrow to return to the beginning of the information to copy.
  4. Once you have placed your cursor on the first word to copy, hold down the CONTROL + SHIFT + right arrow to select the text word by word. By copying the text word by word, you can control the selection process better. If you find you have selected more text than you want, use CONTROL + SHIFT + left arrow to unselect the text backwards in the document.
  5. Now that you have selected the text in the document you want to copy, it is always a good practice to listen to the selected text, by pressing INSERT + SHIFT + down arrow. To copy the text to the clipboard, press CONTROL + C.
  6. Have the student open notepad, wordpad, Hjpad, or Microsoft Word. Once the new document is open, press CONTROL + V to paste the copied text from the clipboard.
  7. At this time, it would be pertinent to mention copyrighted materials. All copied materials must be given credit to the author (if known), and web page. For further information of copyrighted materials law, contact your school’s librarian.
  8. You now have a document open containing the text you pasted from the clipboard. To check your text, you could just use the up and down arrow keys. Or you could use the Windows hotkey CONTROL + HOME to get to the top of your document, and then use the JFW command, INSERT + down arrow to read all of your pasted text.
  9. Now that you have the text from the website you can incorporate it into a report or descriptive paper.
