JAWS Lesson - Review
First have the student plug in his/her keyboard, ac adapter, and headphones.
Items in parenthesis are not to be read. They are for the teacher's reference
and if the student cannot recall the keystroke.
- Review previously used JAWS and Windows commands.
- Open the Start Menu (Windows Key or CTRL+ESC)
- Open Microsoft Word, Type a sentence (Start Menu, then up and down
arrows until MS Word is highlighted, then Enter Key)
- Save the document to diskette (CTRL+S, then tab until you hear Save
in: combo box, My Documents folder, then up or down arrows until you
hear 31/2 floppy, then Enter to change save location, then Enter to
save)
- Save document to hard drive of computer ([CTRL+S will not work
this time because the document has already been saved once and the
CTRL+S will just continue to save the document to the floppy disk. You
will need to go to the menu bar (ALT key) and select file menu, down
arrow until Save as...is heard, then Enter Key], the Save
Dialog box should now be showing. Now tab to make sure you hear Save in:
combo box, My Documents folder, then Enter to save)
- Lets pretend to print the document (CTRL+P) then have him exit the
print dialog box (ESC)
- Exit MS Word (Alt+F4) it will not ask you to save the document, as it
is already saved.
- Now have the student show you how to navigate from the desktop, to the
Start button, to the taskbar. (He just repeatedly presses the TAB key; if
the computer just makes a sound, there is no Windows focus. Please
explain to the student that when there is no Windows focus he will need to
use the INS+F6 JAWS command to minimize all applications and place the
Windows focus on the desktop. The student will now be on the
desktop and can use his arrows to read the Icons. Now have him TAB around to
hear Desktop, Start Button, and Taskbar; after the student hears Taskbar,
he/she uses the right arrow to read all open applications.)
