JAWS Lesson: My Computer 2
Remember that text in parenthesis is for the teacher’s info and only to be
shared with the student if they don’t remember the keystroke. Text in bold is
to help the teacher explain the concept.
- Start the computer. Tab to the desktop. Open My Computer. (If JAWS doesn’t
talk the student will need to use the INS+F6 command to gain focus. To open
My Computer the student selects it and presses the Enter Key.)
- When the My Computer window opens, press ALT then V for the view menu,
then use the up or down arrows to select the list view. Now use the up or
down arrows to select the C: drive from the list view and open it. Once
again press ALT then V, then use the up or down arrows to select list view. List
view places the icons in alphabetical order. The default view is icons,
which places the folders all over the window and makes it difficult to
locate items with the up or down arrows.
- Use the up and down arrows to listen to all the available folders on your
computer’s hard drive. Two familiar folders should be Programs and My
Documents. Tell the teacher at least two more available folders.
- Now close the C: drive window (ALT+F4). Use the up and down arrows to
select the Control Panels folder and open it. This window contains items,
which control how different devices or parts of the Windows operating system
work in the Windows operating system. At no time should you make any changes
while in this window, as it may adversely affect how your computer or JAWS
works.
- Close the Control Panels window. Now use the up and down arrows to select
the Printers folder and open it. This window contains all of the
available printers; some of you will only find the Add Printer icon.
- Close the Printers folder window (ALT+F4). Now close the My Computer
window (ALT+F4). This is the end of the lesson. If the student wants to
review the lesson he/she should have time.
