Training Competencies

Cluster 1: Training

Ability to:

1.1. Develop instructional plans (learning objectives) to meet specific learning needs and technology requirements of individuals and groups.

1.2. Develop lesson plans based on learning objectives identified in the instructional plan.

1.3. Use and modify existing materials, and develop additional materials to achieve learning objectives and implement specific lesson plans.

1.4. Identify the learner's preferred media format. Provide materials in that format to the extent possible.

1.5. Determine specific student learning styles. Develop or adapt teaching strategies and materials to address individual learning styles.

1.6. Assess learner's strengths and limitations. Modify strategies and materials to maximize strengths and reduce the impact of limitations.

1.7. Establish trust and rapport with consumers by demonstrating an understanding of their individual goals and learning styles

1.8. Modify instructional objectives and lesson plans based on unexpected circumstances.

1.9. Assess learner skills, proficiency, and retention. Modify strategies and materials based on findings.

1.10. Promote learner confidence and independence through instruction in problem-solving and self-advocacy.

1.11. Assist the learner to develop a help-getting strategy and support network.

1.12. Evaluate goal achievement. Recommend strategies for continued learning and support (e.g., training resources, self-help tutorials, use of help files)

Cluster 2: Technology

Ability to instruct learners in the use of:

2.1. speech and braille screen access software and hardware

2.2. screen magnification software and hardware

2.3. braille translation software and embossers

2.4. optical character recognition software and scanners

2.5. alternative input software and hardware

2.6. electronic magnification systems (CCTVs) as peripheral devices

2.7. note takers/personal data assistants as peripheral devices
