During this work-training summer experience, students may be working in a garden, grocery store, department store, or office environment. Students may spend at least one day visiting all work settings, and so we recommend a varied wardrobe including the following items:

  • Rubber-soled, closed-toed shoes
  • Hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Clothes appropriate for working in an office: khaki or dress pants, skirts, or dresses
  • Comfortable clothes appropriate for time outdoors (shorts, T-shirts, tennis shoes)

Reminder: ensure that clothing meets the guidelines of the TSBVI Student Dress Code: Students may dress comfortably as appropriate for summer weather. They may not wear clothing that is provocative or risqué (e.g., short shorts, low cut tops, clothing revealing the midriff, shirts with inappropriate language or pictures).

The list below is only a recommendation for the types of clothing needed. Some job sites may require special clothing and, if so, you will be notified of that separately. Please label all clothing items with child's name with a laundry marker, because it can be difficult to avoid confusing the clothing of students who are here for such a short time. Clothes should be colorfast and wash and wear.

  • Jeans and Shorts - Please note: cut-off jeans, short-shorts, and bike shorts may not be worn to class or work
  • T-shirts and tops; skirts and blouses (as appropriate)
  • Tennis shoes (strongly recommended) and/or other closed toe shoes that are good for walking on and off campus
  • Bathrobe or cover up when coming out of the shower.
  • Shower thongs or slippers
  • Bathing suit
  • Underwear and socks, pajamas and robe
  • Windbreaker or light jacket
  • Raincoat and umbrella
  • Backpack, purse or wallet
  • Sun hat and sunglasses

All students in work experience programs need to bring a copy of their Social Security card.

Please bring any low vision devices your child uses to access information (e.g., magnifiers, glasses, telescopes), clearly marked with the student’s name (well, not the glasses). Any personal items such as radios, clocks, stereos, wallets, etc. may be brought to school, but must be marked or engraved with the student's name. Also, please clearly mark suitcases or trunks on the end with your child's full name. Other personal items, which may reduce periods of homesickness, are strongly recommended.
