Winter 1999 Volume 4, No. 1

Kate's Corner

This newsletter is bulging at the seams with information; so I won't keep you from getting right to it. I did want to take a moment, however, to welcome Jim Gatteys to the Outreach team. Jim hails from Lubbock, Texas where he has worked in the areas of transition and technology. Jim will be coordinating activities on a grant that Outreach, in collaboration with National Federation of the Blind of Texas, received from Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services (formerly known as Texas Commision for the Blind) . This grant will provide for four to five family workshops each year for children (ages 8-16) who are visually impaired and on an academic track, their parents, and siblings. The design of these workshops will be shaped by regional input from parents, teachers, caseworkers and students. Additional NFBT will become involved in the presentation of an already popular workshop, "Through Your Child's Eyes." What a pleasure it has already been to work with Tommy Craig, President of NFBT to develop the grant; I know we will enjoy developing the workshops with him as well.
