Students interview guest speakers

Studying the program notes before a show

Talk Show host on air.
June 13 - 24
Students will simulate the creation of a small business: a radio station that broadcasts to the entire campus. Throughout the program, they will be expected to apply academic, compensatory and social skills within functional activities (e.g., internet research, decision-making, reading and writing, managing a budget, and varying one’s social interactions according to the setting).
During the first week, students will plan and design all aspects of the radio station, including the type of programs they wish to produce, roles and tasks that will be needed, scheduling of program slots, advertising, and assessing listener preferences. Students will visit an Austin radio station and meet with visually impaired adults who work in the radio industry. They will research and write news items, weather reports and other announcements. They will also research and schedule guest performances, solicit commercials, and set up and operate the equipment.
After the start up activities, the show will go on the air. The students will control and mix sound, talk to call-in listeners, interview local talent on air, follow complex instructions and meet deadlines. As the business comes to a close, the students will evaluate its various components and make suggestions for improvement.
