Exploring the ecosystem at Aquarena Springs.

Learning Independent Living Skills
Riding the bus
June 20-July 1
Younger secondary students usually prefer a more general enrichment program that does not have the wider student age range and focused content of our other academic secondary classes. Like our elementary classes, the Middle School Enrichment class will provide opportunities to learn and practice skills that are needed in Middle School, within the context of enjoyable activities.
Students in this two-week program will participate in a wide range of exciting activities related to topics such as teenage style, fun in the kitchen, and recreation in the community. Through these activities, they will practice skills from the Expanded Core Curriculum for students with visual impairments (e.g., technology, orientation and mobility, social skills, and personal organization), and the practical application of mathematics and language arts.
An invaluable part of the program is the opportunity to interact with other students with visual impairments. Middle School students especially benefit from interacting with peers who share their areas of uniqueness. For many, talking with other students about the challenges they face at home and school may both alleviate feelings of isolation and increase their confidence. Students often begin or deepen lifelong friendships in these programs.
Note: This is an enrichment class and has a different purpose than the Transition to Middle School class offered during our elementary programs. The Transition class specifically addresses skills that students will face for the first time when they move to a new and larger campus.
