What? A Museum? I didn't know they had one!

The TSBVI museum, now officially the Phil Hatlen Museum, opened in 2006 in honor of our Sesquicentennial. It is located in 'Dorm A" at the front of the campus (with a banner visible from the front parking lot).

Dedication of TSBVI Museum, November 4th, 2006

Our museum was dedicated on November 4th to Dr. Phil Hatlen. Natalie Barraga spoke about Dr. Hatlen and the ceremony took place during the Parent Weekend ceremonies held every year.

Dr. Phil Hatlen is the current Superintendent of TSBVI and world-wide expert on visual impairment. Dr. Hatlen's experience in the field spans over fifty years, from when teaching blind children was more of a folk art -- and through the formative years establishing the profession. His Expanded Core Curriculum and the National Agenda reflect his devotion to the idea that every blind person has the opportunity to be equal and the right to be different.

We are always looking for volunteers and if you'd like to do so, please contac Kristi Sprinkle at 206-9207. What we need are docents and people interested in preserving the history of the school. We would like to have the museum open every day for a few hours, but without your help, it's just not possible. Donations to pay for supplies can be sent to TSBVI MUSEUM FUND, 1100 West 45th Street, Austin, Texas 78756.

Also, we would like to thank Linda Vann for her wonderful donations of items that her great Aunt (Renata Schultz) possessed, such as the long photo of the school and its entire population in 1922, a portrait of her aunt in graduation attire and postcards from that time period.

I'd also like to thank Marcus Cardwell for his invaluable loan of several antiquated Brailling items.

Most of the items in the museum came from campus through the staff's generous contributions and acknowledgement of the importance of preserving our school's history.
