Post-Secondary FAQ

How long does the program last?

That depends on the student. Some students complete the program in about ten months, while other stay up to a year. A student's completion date often depends on his/her individual needs and his/her progress in the program. The date of completion is usually pretty flexible, given that the student has achieved appropriate program requirements.

Is there always a PSP staff member at the apartment complex?

No.  This is an important distinction between PSP, the regular TSBVI programs, and the general Criss Cole program.  Staff members are not on the premises 24/7.  Students are provided with instruction and emergency contact information to use in case an urgent situation occurs.

Does a student have to be on SSI or SSDI to be eligible for the program?

Not necessarily.  However, since the student is required to pay for their own groceries and maintenance fees ($50 per month), the student must provide proof that he/she has secured the funds to participate in the program. For most students, this means that they receive SSI or SSDI. Students who have alternative income sources will need to notify the PSP coordinator.

Are the apartments co-ed?

Yes.  Students live alone in their apartments, but just like an apartment complex in the general public, a student may be living next door to a student of the opposite sex.

Is there a curfew for PSP students?

No.  Students do not have a curfew, but are expected to be on time and prepared to actively participate in classes each day.  Please refer to the Rules and Guidelines of the program for specific information on this topic.

Are students allowed to have visitors in their apartments?

Yes.  Students can have visitors during visiting hours.  However, only immediate family members may stay overnight.  Please see the Rules and Guidelines for the program for more information on this and other related topics.

Can students access the TSBVI health center services?

No.  Students are considered off-campus and are responsible for making arrangements for their health carewith medical professionals in the community.  In addition, students are responsible for their own medications.  Students will need to be sure to bring their Medicaid card or other proof of insurance.  PSP staff can help students access the appropriate resources for their needs.

Can students use the  TSBVI Weekends Home program to go home on the weekends?

No.  Students are responsible for making their own travel arrangements if they choose to go out of town on the weekends.  They will need to communicate ahead of time with instructors and staff in the event that they will be missing classes or activities.

How do students set up additional utilities, such as telephone and cable?

Students can contact any of the local telephone, cable, and Internet providers and give the company the correct address, including apartment.  The student will also need to notify PSP staff that these utilities will be installed, so that they can make appropriate arrangements for access into secured areas of the facility.  Students will be responsible for any charges involved in the installation and use of these additional utilities.  For the names of local providers, feel free to contact the PSP staff.
