Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 pkg. yeast (about 1 tsp.)
  • 6 Tbsp. milk
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. shortening
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 egg

Instructions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine 3/4 cup of the flour and the yeast. Stir and set aside.
  2. Heat milk, sugar, shortening, and salt just until warm, stirring constantly.
  3. Add to dry mixture.
  4. Add egg.
  5. Beat at low speed for 30 seconds. Scrap bowl.
  6. Beat 3 minutes at high speed.
  7. By hand, stir in enough of the remaining flour to make a moderately soft dough.
  8. Knead on a lightly floured surface till smooth and elastic, 5 to 8 minutes.
  9. Shape into ball and place into greased bowl; turn once. Cover; let rise in warm place till double (45-60 minutes).
  10. Punch down; divide in half.
  11. Roll to 1/2-inch thickness.
  12. Cut with floured doughnut cutter. Cover; let rise 30 minutes.
  13. Fry in deep fryer 1 minute on each side.
  14. Drain on paper towel. Roll in glaze or powdered sugar.
