CHANGE IN HEALTH SERVICES

Before the TSBVI may expand or change the health-care services available at the School from those that were available on January 1, 1999, the board must:

  1. Hold a public hearing at which the board provides an opportunity for public comment and discloses all information on the proposed health-care services, including:
    1. All health-care services to be provided;
    2. Whether federal law permits or requires any health-care service provided to be kept confidential from parents;
    3. Whether a child's medical records will be accessible to the parent;
    4. Information concerning grant funds to be used;
    5. The titles of persons who will have access to the medical records of a student; and
    6. The security measures that will be used to protect the privacy of students' medical records.
  2. 2. Approve the expansion or change by a record vote.

WELLNESS

The School shall follow state and federal nutrition guidelines that advance student health and reduce childhood obesity and shall promote the general wellness of all students through nutrition education, physical activity, and other school-based activities.

GUIDELINES AND GOALS

Part of the mission of the School is to improve the health of the school community by teaching students and families ways to establish and maintain life-long healthy eating and physical activity habits. The mission shall be accomplished through nutrition education, physical education and activity, and food served in the School.

NUTRITION GUIDELINES

The School shall develop nutritional guidelines and wellness goals in consultation with the local school health advisory council and with involvement from representatives of the student body, school food service, school administration, the Board, parents, and the public.

The School shall ensure that nutritional guidelines for reimbursable school meals shall be at least as restrictive as federal regulations and guidance pursuant to the Child Nutrition Act and the National School Lunch Act.

In addition to legal requirements, the School shall:

  1. Establish age-appropriate guidelines for food and beverages during classroom parties, birthdays, or school celebrations.
  2. Provide teachers with education and guidelines on the use of food for instructional purposes or as a reward in the classroom.

WELLNESS GOALS

Nutrition Education

The School shall implement, in accordance with law, a coordinated health program with a nutrition education component and shall use health course curriculum that emphasizes the importance of proper nutrition.

In addition, the School establishes the following goals for nutrition education:

  1. Students will receive nutrition education that fosters the adoption and maintenance of healthy eating behaviors.
  2. Nutrition education will be a Schoolwide priority and will be integrated into other areas of the curriculum, as appropriate.
  3. Educational nutrition information will be shared with families to positively influence the health of students and community members.

Physical Activity

The School shall implement, in accordance with law, a coordinated health program with physical education and physical activity components and shall offer at least the required amount of physical activity for all grades.

In addition, the School establishes the following goals for physical activity:

  1. The School will provide an environment that fosters safe and enjoyable fitness activities for all students, including those who are not athletically gifted.
  2. Physical education classes will regularly emphasize moderate to vigorous activity.
  3. The School will encourage parents to support their children's participation, to be active role models, and to include physical activity in family events.
  4. The School will encourage teachers to integrate physical activity into the academic curriculum when appropriate.
  5. The School will enhance the quality of physical education curricula and provide training of physical education teachers through ongoing staff development.
  6. The School will encourage students, parents, staff, and community members to use the school's physical activity facilities outside of the school day as available.

School-Based Activities

The School establishes the following goals to create an environment conducive to healthful eating and physical activity and to express a consistent wellness message through other school-based activities:

  1. Sufficient time will be allowed for students to eat meals.
  2. Wellness for students and their families at suitable school activities.
  3. Employee wellness and involvement will be promoted.

IMPLEMENTATION

The Superintendent, in coordination with the School Health Advisory Council, shall develop and implement a procedure to measure and monitor the implementation of this wellness policy.
