EHAC - BASIC INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAM: REQUIRED INSTRUCTION (SECONDARY)

PROVISION OF REQUIRED CURRICULUM

For any TSBVI student whose IEP includes instruction in required curriculum as described in this policy, TSBVI will either:

  1. offer the course to the student; or
  2. arrange for the student to take the course in a local public school setting.

GRADES 6-8

The School must provide instruction in the required curriculum as specified in 19 TAC 74.1, relating to essential knowledge and skills. The School shall ensure that sufficient time is provided for teachers to teach and for students to learn English language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, fine arts, health, physical education, technology applications, and to the extent possible, languages other than English.

Coordinated Health Program

TEA shall make available one or more coordinated health programs designed to prevent obesity, cardiovascular disease, and Type II diabetes in elementary, middle, and junior high school students.

Beginning with the 2006-07 school year, the School shall participate in appropriate training to implement TEA's coordinated health program and implement the program for the School's middle and junior high school students.

HIGH SCHOOL COURSES AT EARLIER GRADES

The School may offer courses designated for grades 9-12 in earlier grade levels.

GRADES 9-12 COURSE OFFERINGS

The School shall provide instruction in the required curriculum as specified in 19 TAC 74.1, relating to the essential knowledge and skills. According to each student's IEP, the School shall ensure that sufficient time is provided for teachers to teach and for students to learn the essential knowledge and skills.

The School shall offer the courses listed below in grades 9-12 and shall maintain evidence that students have the opportunity to take these courses.

  1. English Language Arts: English I, II, III, IV.
  2. Mathematics: Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, and Pre-Calculus and Mathematical Models with applications.
  3. Science: Integrated Physics and Chemistry, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Science courses shall be at least 40 percent hands-on laboratory investigations and fieldwork, using appropriate scientific inquiry.
  4. Social Studies: United States History Studies Since Reconstruction, World History Studies, United States Government, World Geography Studies.
  5. Economics - Economics with Emphasis on the Free Enterprise System and Its Benefits.
    Beginning with the 2006-07 school year, the School shall incorporate instruction in personal financial literacy into any course meeting a requirement for an economics credit, using materials approved by the State Board of Education.

  6. Physical Education : Foundations of Personal Fitness and at least two of the following:
    1. Adventure/outdoor education;
    2. Aerobic activities;
    3. Individual sports; or
    4. Team sports.
  7. Health Education - Health I.
  8. Fine arts: courses selected from at least two of the four fine arts areas (art, music, theatre and dance).
    1. Art I, II, III, IV;
    2. Music I, II, III, IV;
    3. Theatre I, II, III, IV; or
    4. Dance I, II, III, IV.
  9. Career and technology education, taught on a campus in the district with provisions for contracting for additional offerings with programs or institutions as may be practical. Courses selected from at least three of the eight career and technology areas, as follows:
    1. Agricultural science and technology education;
    2. Business education;
    3. Career orientation;
    4. Health science technology education;
    5. Family and consumer sciences education/home economics education;
    6. Technology education/industrial technology education;
    7. Marketing education; and
    8. Trade and industrial education.
  10. Languages other than English: Levels I, II and III of the same language.
  11. Technology applications: at least four courses selected from Computer Science I, Computer Science II, Desktop Publishing, Digital Graphics/Animation, Multimedia, Video Technology, Web Mastering, or Independent Student in Technology Applications.
  12. Speech: Communications Applications.

19 TAC 74.3(b)(2)

Students shall be given the opportunity each year to select courses in which they intend to participate from a list that includes all courses listed above. If the School is not going to offer all required courses every year, but will offer particular courses only every other year, it shall give notice of such fact to all enrolled students.

TSBVI shall either teach, or provide access to instruction in a local public school any course a student is required to take for graduation, or any course in which:

  1. for local public school courses, ten or more students indicate they will participate;
  2. for TSBVI courses, three or more students indicate they will participate.

COMPONENT

For students entering grade 9 beginning with the 2007-08 school year, the School must ensure that one or more courses offered in the required curriculum for the Recommended and Advanced High School Programs include a research writing component.
