As participants in the TSBVI Mentor Program, first year TTU/SFASU students, protégés and their mentors qualify for a trip to Austin to observe experienced VI professionals at the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired and in the Austin Independent School District.
Mentor Centers are scheduled three times every school year. During a Mentor Center you will spend two days observing your choice of TVIs and COMS as they work with students, attending concurrent mini-sessions on relevant topics, and learning about Criss Cole Rehabilitation Center and the DARS-DBS Children Programs. During lunch you will have the opportunity to discuss what you have observed with the instructors. Hotel, meals, travel (refer to Q&A), and substitute teacher expenses are paid for by the mentor program.
To be eligible to attend you must be a student currently working on VI or O&M certification or a VI professional who has entered the field within the last three years. Experienced professionals who are new to Texas are also invited to attend. If your mentor would like to accompany you to a Mentor Center, s/he is welcome and will receive the same accommodations.
Plan to arrive in time for a 5:00 dinner and a (required) orientation meeting on Sunday evening. Observations begin at 7:45 a.m. Monday morning and will end at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The three Mentor Center sessions for the 2011-2012 academic year are:
OCTOBER 23-25, 2011
FEBRUARY 12-14, 2012
APRIL 15-17, 2012
If you are eligible and would like to attend one of the sessions, please make a reservation as soon as possible by completing the attached reservation application and sending it to me. Reservations will be made on a first come first served basis. Refer to the attached Q&A for information, then contact me if you have further questions.
