General Information

Beginning no later than the age of 14, transition is a collaborative and coordinated approach to planning for the adult life of each student.

Beginning no later than the age of 14, transition is a collaborative and coordinated approach to planning for the adult life of each student. Transition planning is guided by the ultimate goal of community engagement through lifelong learning, work activity, and independent living based on the abilities and needs of the student. Student participation in the decision-making and planning process is supported to the fullest of their capabilities.

At Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, we seek to collaborate with our students’ school districts from across the state to provide programming that prepares them for their unique adult schedule and life in their home community. This requires a model in which the student is supported and serviced by a team of stakeholders comprised of family and care providers, their local district, TSBVI, state agencies, and other community members, no matter what the age of the student. Our coordinated efforts focus on individualized instruction and experiences that are aligned with their post-secondary goals towards a meaningful, productive, and sustainable adult life.

To support students and their stakeholders in the process of planning for an informed and self-determined future, TSBVI provides Information and resources, a continuum of Career Education experiences, the 18+ Experience In Transition Program (EXIT), and the Post-Secondary Program in coordination with CCRC and TWC.
