DISCOVERING THE FUTURE: A TSBVI Weekend Workshop

Transition from School to Adult Life
for Students with Visual & Multiple Disabilities,
and those who are Deafblind
April 12 – 14, 2024
This weekend workshop will help families of students with visual and multiple impairments, and those who are deafblind, gain new ideas about making plans for their family members’ adult life after graduation. The targeted audience is families of middle school, high school and students in a district’s 18+ program who will need long-term services and supports in the community, and for whom traditional paths to college and career may not seem like the best fit.
Please join us to learn more about innovative strategies for planning and executing a person-centered transition plan for your family member. Information about resources will be shared, and you will have an opportunity to learn from each other about supporting a personally meaningful adult life in the community.
Our weekend begins on Friday evening at 6:00 PM with a Family Reception at the hotel. Dinner will be provided, and you will have an opportunity to meet other families and individuals who will be joining you for the weekend.
Workshop sessions will be held on Saturday and Sunday at the hotel. Sessions begin at 8:30 AM and continue until 4:30 PM on Saturday, with lunch provided. On Sunday sessions start at 8:30 AM and continue until noon. A box lunch is provided on Sunday.
This event will be highly interactive and is designed to help families discover possibilities for adult life. The focus on helping parents or caregivers envision successful outcomes for their children or young adults provides a first step toward rich and rewarding lives after graduation. Participants will learn about finding and advocating for the tools and resources they need to navigate along the way and reach their individual destinations.
The target audience for this event is adult family members of students who will need significant, life-long support. Professionals who work with a participating family’s student, or who have a particular interest in transition planning for these students, may contact us regarding attending the event.
Registration:
- $50.00 per person for Early Bird (cut off April 1st)
- $60.00 per person for Regular Registration

Hotel:
A block of rooms with a discounted rate has been set aside for participants to book at the hotel. Please contact Jesus Curi for more details.
Financial Assistance for Families:
Family members of students who are deafblind or have visual impairments are eligible for limited financial assistance from TSBVI Outreach Programs to help cover travel and childcare expenses. You will have the opportunity to select this option when you submit your registration.
If your family member has a case open with the Health and Human Services Commission Blind Children’s Program (HHSC) or Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), we ask that you contact your caseworker to see what financial assistance may be available from those sources before registering and requesting financial assistance from TSBVI Outreach.
Child Care:
No childcare or student activities will be provided on-site, so your children may not attend this event. We may be able to cover some of the cost of child care you set up at home. If your child has the interest and ability to actively participate in a day-long discussion during a workshop, then the subject matter at this workshop is probably not the best match for your family. Families of students who have those kinds of academic skills might be better served in a similar workshop for students who are likely to be more independent as adults, such as “Game of Life.”
