Ways To Enhance Socialization And Social Interaction For Visually Impaired Students

  1. Encourage eye contact (direction of gaze) and appropriate gestural behavior
  2. Encourage exploration of the environment by providing a variety of experiences
  3. Encourage interactive conversation that focuses on turn taking
  4. Provide opportunities for imaginative play that focuses on sharing
  5. Encourage interaction between siblings, relatives, and peers
  6. Introduce your child to "in" games and toys
  7. Teach your child to use the vocabulary of his/her peers when engaged in play
  8. Become a part of play groups, church groups, and organized group activities such as scouting, sports, dance, and drama groups
  9. Encourage your child to invite peers to your home for birthday parties, sleep-overs, or after school play
  10. Provide opportunities for your child to interact with visually impaired peers and role model
