Ways To Enhance Socialization And Social Interaction For Visually Impaired
Students

- Encourage eye contact (direction of gaze) and appropriate gestural
behavior
- Encourage exploration of the environment by providing a variety
of experiences
- Encourage interactive conversation that focuses on turn taking
- Provide opportunities for imaginative play that focuses on sharing
- Encourage interaction between siblings, relatives, and peers
- Introduce your child to "in" games
and toys
- Teach your child to use the vocabulary of his/her peers when engaged
in play
- Become a part of play groups, church groups, and organized group
activities such as scouting, sports, dance, and drama groups
- Encourage your child to invite peers to your home for birthday
parties, sleep-overs, or after school play
- Provide opportunities for your child to interact with visually
impaired peers and role model
