Intervener2Interveners need specialized skills related to deafblindness, in order to provide one-on-one instructional support to students who are deafblind. They also need appropriate supervision and support from the IEP team. To help meet the needs of interveners in Texas, the Texas Deafblind Project is pleased to announce the 2017 Introduction to the Intervener Team Model.

This conference is for those individuals who are newly assigned as an intervener or current interveners who have not yet had the opportunity to attend this introductory training. Each intervener should attend with a professional member of the educational team (ideally a classroom teacher, a teacher for the deaf and hard of hearing, a teacher for students with visual impairments or another professional regularly involved with the student). Adult family members of the student are also welcome to attend with the IEP team members.

 

Start Times and End Times:

Thursday, October 5th - 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM

Friday October 6th - 8:30 AM to 3:45 PM

Audience:

Interveners are required to attend with at least one member of their educational team.  Registration is limited to 55 individuals. There is a limit of 3 people per team plus 2 family members (5 total).

This training targets:

  • newly assigned interveners or current interveners who have not attended this training,
  • professional member of intervener's educational team and
  • adult family members of the student. 

During the two days of training individuals will participate in both general and small breakout sessions.  This workshop is highly interactive and will include a number of simulation activities to help participants better understand the unique learning styles and needs of students with deafblindness and how the intervener can be a bridge (not a barrier) to accessing the world with the proper support from the educational team.

Breakout Sessions:

Sessions have been designed to meet the needs of individuals working with students at all communication levels:

  • Pre-Symbolic Communicator
  • Emerging Symbolic Communicator
  • Intermediate Symbolic Communicator
  • Advanced Symbolic Communicator.

Lodging:

All participants are required to make their own hotel reservations. View a list of hotels near TSBVI.

Meals and Breaks:

In order to make maximum use of our time together, we have scheduled presentations or activities to take place during lunch. Lunch and snacks will be provided. If you have special dietary needs, please be aware that you may wish to bring your own food; a refrigerator and microwave are available. We can accommodate for individuals who prefer vegetarian, but we cannot address specific food allergies or specialty diets.  We DO NOT HAVE VENDING MACHINES. No cokes, etc. are available, so plan to bring your own if you want them.

Financial Assistance: 

Limited funds may be available to assist families with their travel related expenses.  A financial assistance check box will be located on the checkout page near the end of your registration process.  Before making a request, we kindly ask that family members first seek out assistance with their HHSC / TWC counselor.

This workshop is not suited for children to attend.  Onsite childcare will not be available.

Note: you may register now and pay later if you are paying with a check or purchase order.  Credit card payment will be processed immediately when you register.

  • $40.00 for Early Registration (thru September 26, 2017)
  • $50.00 for Late Registration (after September 26, 2017)

Cancellation Policy:
